On Friday at 10 a.m Häcken’s new signing Diego Lugano entered the training pitch at Gothia Park Academy with his new team mates. Despite just having completed a 25 hour flight he completed the session before going to work out in the gym. At the subsequent press conference he was awarded shirt number 2 from Häcken legend Johan Lind.
– I chose to play for Häcken because I need to be able to fully focus on training and getting back into shape for the Copa America this summer. Häcken is a very professional club and I got a great welcome from my team mates at practice today, said Lugano in front of an assembled Swedish press corps.
It is not his first visit to Sweden, he went to Kiruna on vacation last summer, and he is aware of Swedish football through former team mates Sebastian Egurén, Markus Rosenberg and Jonas Olsson. Lugano confirmed that he has kept in shape after the injury at the 2014 World Cup, but that he needs to play competetive matches in order to fully regain his form and to become eligible for the Uruguay national team again.
– I hope my experience from other leagues and clubs will benefit the team and I will do my utmost for the club, said Lugano.
The contract runs until June 4th, however there is a possibility for an extension, said sports director Sonny Karlsson.
Johan Lind, with a total of 542 matches played for Häcken, thought it felt good to hand over the number 2 shirt to Diego Lugano. No player has worn the number 2 shirt for Häcken since Lind’s retirement in 2012. Lugano has worn number 2 in the Uruguayan national team.
Tomorrow at 1 p.m Häcken will continue their preparation for the season opener by playing Norwegian side Vålerenga IF and it is not unlikely that No 2 will be on the pitch.
